Nacogdoches has strong ties to West, Texas

Posted: Updated:
NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) -

East Texas already has numerous connections to the town of West. Several come from Nacogdoches.

Nacogdoches firefighter Travis Vanscoder grabbed his bags at two in the morning. The state's urban search and rescue team member is today in West performing important duties to help those in need.

"He is in logistics. And he is the guy that will shop around and make sure we have our supplies, we have our people in place," Terry Westmoreland, a battalion chief with the Nacogdoches Fire Department, said. "He's kinda an organizer. Does a very good job."

Having been in similar disaster modes, battalion Westmoreland knows eventually the firefighter's job could sadly turn into recovery.

"They have several vans," Westmoreland said. "They have partial teams in several vans and they have sectors to search."

Nacogdoches has deep-rooted ties to the fertilizer industry. Eighty years ago M.S. Wright founded Lone Star Feeds and Fertilizer. Today fertilizer is in the name only.

"I can easily see how people would be confused because in our lone star logo, it says feed and fertilizer, but we discontinued that roughly 30 years ago," Bud Wright, the CEO of Texas Farm Products, said. "We now have fertilizer manufactured for us by a third party."

Fertilizer components are blended at American Plant Food Corporation in Nacogdoches. No manufacturing processes are required.

Even though Lone Star hasn't manufactured fertilizer for decades, they can still empathize with what the manufacturer and the emergency workers are going through.

Emergency workers are dealing with things like injuries, death, and shock. It's the details former Nacogdoches Medical Center CEO Glenn Robinson is bringing to the world. Robinson currently serves as the CEO of Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco, where more than 90 blast victims are receiving treatment.

"As you would expect in this type of blast, a lot of lacerations," Robinson said.

A hospital administrator, an industry, and a firefighter are tonight doing what they can to bring peace and comfort to those in need.

Wright said the Texas Grain and Feed Association was asked by the Fertilizer Institute to circulate its fact sheet on anhydrous ammonia and other fertilizer products. You can find that fact sheet here.
