LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The gates at Churchill Downs are among the few places where increased security will be visible on Oaks and Derby Days

Louisville Metro Police said they are confident with the solid security plan they have in place. It contains built-in procedures for a scenario such as the Boston bombings, but it is flexible to cater to the day's needs.

Twelve-hundred officers from federal, state and local levels will be scattered throughout Churchill Downs. Many of them will be around the gates using a wand to screen people.

LMPD said it will have adequate fire and EMS crews on the grounds. Officers will also be outside the track on neighboring streets surveying the scene as people walk to the track.

Major Kelly Jones said after the Boston bombings the department is asking for the public's help. "If you see something, say something," Jones said. "It's important. Find the nearest police, tell him or her, ‘Hey, it doesn't look right.' If (it) looks suspicious or this bothers (you), we'll address it."

Keep in mind that roads will close and directions of traffic will be altered to ease congestion.

Metro police said on-street parking is free; notify police if someone is charging for street parking.

"Additional parking is also available at the fairgrounds and Papa John's, and we will have buses we will transport back and forth," Jones said. "The taxi lot has moved from Gate 17 down in between 3rd and 4th and central."
