Renovations underway at Oxmoor Center

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - If you've been to Oxmoor Center recently, you'll have noticed some changes in the works at the shopping center.

Just above the heads of shoppers is a major renovation project at Oxmoor Center.

"The fountain is gone, the elevators are gone and all the escalators are gone," said Oxmoor General Manager Jacob Sappenfield.

Sappenfield says the entire second level is gone too.

"There was a lot of opportunity to get some of those more successful retailers in a better trafficked portion of the center," he said.

Sappenfield says the multimillion dollar renovation has been in the works for several years.  It's only the second facelift since the mall opened in 1971.

"We want to make it more open, more inviting," said Sappenfield. "We want people to be able to find their way easier and just be able to see what's going on."

At night, after shoppers leave, crews are demolishing the walls, the overhangs and platforms that used to form the second level.

"The idea is when this is all done, you'll be able to stand by Macy's and see all the way down to the Von Maur wing," Sappenfield said, "When before, people from out of town sometimes didn't even know there was another wing over there because it was blocked."

Moms and dads will be glad to hear about one more part of the plan for Oxmoor: the return of the play area, which has been gone for the past three years.

"We've wanted to bring it back for several years," Sappenfield said. "We've got a really exciting new design and we're hoping to have it in by the end of the year."

Just across the Watterson Expressway, you've probably gotten used to construction crews at Mall St Matthews as crews wrap up construction at a new movie theater.  A mall spokeswoman says the target date is May 16, coinciding with the opening of the Star Trek movie.

The movie theater is hiring in a store front near Dillards.
