Training scenario held for injured fan at Cintas Center

NORWOOD, OH (FOX19) -

Xavier University collaborated with the Norwood Fire Department on Wednesday for a student training exercise.

The event was a mock scenario, simulating an injured fan during an event at Xavier's Cintas Center.

Students and EMS were given the chance to practice communication and cooperation during a crisis. The scenario took place in the upper level seating, with the fan being taken from the Cintas Center to an ambulance and transported to the hospital.

Students performed medical care for the 'injured fan' throughout the exercise.

Organizers say recent events in Boston helped inspire Wednesday's collaborative effort.

"We look at the Boston Marathon. There were a lot of athletic trainers, EMS, nurses and doctors at the finish line that were rendering care. So, the fact that we did it here in the arena, we kind of came up with a creative way that would involve and incorporate all active health disciplines to a most realistic situation or scenario that we could come up with," explained Mike Mulcahey of Xavier University.

The training was sponsored by a health and human services grant.

Organizers say better communication results in fewer errors and better patient care.
