LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A 35-year-old man with a long criminal history pursued the murders of three Kentuckiana people, according to police.

The plan was foiled, thanks to Kentucky State Police and now the man is behind bars in Nelson County on a $1 million bond.

Neighbor Scott Thurman described the area as, "Just a typical county neighborhood. You never hear about any crime." But what David Orlando Smith is accused of reads more like a fast-paced, elaborate, big city crime spree.

"This man had solicited this other person to kill," said Kentucky State Police Master Trooper Norman Chaffins. And kill not just one, but three people.

"The three Bardstown residents were his ex-girlfriend, her current boyfriend and her son," Chaffins said.

The son just recently turned 18. Kentucky State Police arrested Smith on Monday.

Police are not releasing the motive or other details in this case, but neighbors said just the headline is enough to concern them.

"Disturbing. It's pretty chilling. It almost makes you want to pack up and leave,"
Thurman said.

Smith is being held on a $1 million bond at the Nelson County Jail. It's a place that's very familiar to him, with a criminal record that stretches back to the mid-1990's.

"He does have some other criminal charges," Chaffins said.

And where to begin?  There's assault in 1997, burglary in 2005, domestic disturbances in 2007 and 2010, assault in 2008, and harassment in 2010, among other charges.

Neighbors at Smith's home off of Woodlawn in Bardstown said they have not seen him much, but saw quite a commotion last week.

"We thought somebody had been evicted; there were all kinds of belongings like a couch and chair. It looked like the whole house was put outside," Thurman said.

Now it's his dirty laundry that's being put outside as three people are fortunate that someone alerted police before it was too late.
