Churchill Downs will be the showplace of the world next week, as it should be. Jets will be flying in this time next week from all over the world. Louisville will be eyeballed worldwide.
The irony is Louisville is eyeballed worldwide every day, thanks to WorldPort, the worldwide air hub for the United Parcel Service located at the Louisville International Airport.
It is the Industrial Disneyland of the world with 233 state of the art jets flying out of a complex that is bigger than the Pentagon. Every second of every day an airplane from UPS is flying somewhere in the world. An average of 1.6 million pieces of cargo are transported to 225 places in the world each day, making the Louisville hub the 10th busiest cargo airport in the world.
UPS has not only invested $2 billion and employs more than 20,000 people in Louisville, but has attracted more than 150 employers and 12,000 other jobs here.
And the philanthropy provided by the employees of UPS is off the charts, raising the most money each year in the United Way fund and sponsoring events like Thunder this past week.
Pulling off a successful Kentucky Derby is a logistical challenge each year. Hats off to Churchill Downs for doing it. A special tip of the hat to UPS, who pulls off logistical heroics daily.
