Safety concerns move state fair concert seating to playing field

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – The president of the Kentucky State Fair Board says the grandstand of Cardinal Stadium will not be used again.

During a Friday afternoon press conference, Rip Rippetoe said the 56 year old facility at the Kentucky Exposition Center is in such a state of disrepair that concertgoers will not use the stands for seating during the 2013 Kentucky State Fair in August.

Rippetoe said a recent inspection shows the stadium is in such horrible condition it is not a matter of if it will be torn down, but when.

Because of the condition of the grandstand, Rippetoe said seating for concerts during this year's state fair will on the playing field, with the stage placed along the first base line of the baseball field.

The stadium, which opened in 1956, once housed the University of Louisville football and baseball teams, along with the Louisville Colonels, Redbirds and RiverBats Class AAA professional teams.
