LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Rain or shine, thousands of runners will pound the pavement early Saturday morning for the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon and miniMarathon.

This year marks 40 years for this event and KDF officials have taken even extra precautions to make sure weather is the only thing you have to worry about.

Runners carbed up and geared up for the big day on Friday night.

Over at UPS, it was a different sort or prep. Employees and Eastern High School Army JROTC loaded up 16.5 tons of powerade, bottles and cups for the race.

"All of our vehicles will be at the water stops and our folks obviously will be in there brown uniforms and as runners go by you will hear a lot of thanks UPS for the water and that makes you feel good because again this is a great time of year to be in Louisville. This is a great community event and these things don't happen by themselves," said Pat O'Leary, UPS coordinator of marathon logistics.

After the Boston tragedy, security is a on a lot of minds.New this year, police K-9 units will be on site, where runners will be required to leave personal items. Extra officers and triage stations are also being added.

"I just hope people that are in the stands just pay attention," said Kelli Sanneman, runner. "That's all you can ask for."

These runners are hoping for clear skies, but no matter what, ready or not, the race will start at 7:30 a.m.

Remember you must have your bib on or you will be removed from the race. Back packs and strollers are not allowed, but water bottle belts are okay.
