LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A Louisville daycare center owner has been sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to theft and fraud charges.
In February, Lavonia Lewars admitted to getting hundreds of thousands of dollars from the state of Kentucky for children who didn't actually attend her facility, Heavenly Angels Day Care.
Lewars received a sentence of 10 years in prison from Judge Barry Willett.
On June 12, 2012, a van belonging to Heavenly Angels Day Care crashed into a tree on Algonquin Parkway after a tire blew out. An adult monitor was killed and more than dozen children were treated at area hospitals.
Lewars closed her three daycare centers shortly after the accident.
