HENRYVILLE, IN (WAVE) - A family mourns after they lost their loved one who also served more than two decades in the Navy to a fire. It happened yesterday morning at 9:45 on Country Lake Road in Henryville.
Reva Rose lives across the driveway. She ran outside to find the home of her brother, Arnold Roberts, engulfed.
"He was in submarines," said Rose. "He was a medical officer. He spent 22 years in the Navy and then he worked after he retired from the Navy, he worked in the nuclear plants, one in Connecticut and one in Tennessee."
Rose said when she saw the fire she knew her brother was gone.
"I knew it. I knew it if my brother was in there he was gone because it was you know the house was already gone."
Rose told us she's not sure why Roberts didn't get out. As firefighters put the flames out they found Roberts in the kitchen, by a door. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Roberts didn't make it but at least eight of his dogs did. Rose said he couldn't give them up.
"I told him I said you ought to take them dogs to the pound," said Rose. "I said you got too many. He said they've got such sad eyes."
