Controversial casino sign lights up downtown skyline

The Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati has a new sign lighting up the downtown skyline.

The 80 foot sign is aimed at 80 attracting drivers along Interstate 71 to the casino.

Initially, some local residents argued the sign was too large. Cincinnati's zoning code allows for signs with a maximum height of 16 feet.

In October 2012, casino owner Rock Ohio Caesers Cincinnati LLC presented an application during a zoning hearing to have the sign approved.

Cincinnati's Zone Hearing Examiner later granted a variance for the sign in December.

The Horseshoe Casino officially opened on March 4, 2013.
