We always want to look our best, especially when visitors come to town. There will be more than a few of them joining us from all over the world this week.

They likely won't venture too far from Churchill Downs, but you really don't have to go that far from the track to see thousands of vacant properties.

Louisville leaders say there are more than 5,000 vacant properties and more than 1,000 of them are abandoned.

Neighborhoods like Portland, Shawnee, California and Parkland that otherwise are filled with hard working people trying to make a better life for their families are subject to seeing one of every three homes abandoned, negatively impacting their home values and their quality of life.

We applaud Mayor Fischer's resolve to try and cut in half the number of abandoned properties over the next three years. It won't be easy and will require extensive funding. But it will be well worth the effort.
