Post position breakdown, Derby picks

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - For the most part,  the post position draw for Derby 139 was solid for all the competitors - except for maybe Black Onyx who drew the dreaded one hole and Oxbow who'll break from two.  Both of these guys have good early speed, and they would typically need to get on or near the lead.  As we've seen in recent years, that inside post can be a nightmare (remember Lookin' at Lucky and Archarcharch, both top contenders who virtually lost all chance when they were squeezed down on the inside.)

The Todd Squad is in great shape as far as the Derby starting gate goes. Verrazano breaks from the near middle of the pack - and same for Pletcher contenders Overanalyze, Palice Malice, and Charming Kitten.  Now the last of the quintet, Revolutionary,  is probably okay from post three,  but Calvin Borel will have to be careful early and  not get squeezed.

I'm not surprised that Churchill oddsmaker, Mike Battalgia, made Orb the very slight morning line favorite over Verrazano.  Orb, who's been great this winter and spring, seems to have really gotten better since arriving in Louisville.  His work earlier in the week was tremendous and has really gotten noticed by fans and experts alike.

Coach Pitino's entry, Goldencents, is really sittin' pretty from post  eight.  Goldencents should be able to shoot right to the front - or maybe just off of  the lead and if Kevin Krigger can get him to relax, watch out.

The picks:  Win: Orb    Place:  Revolutionary    Show: Verrazano.
