LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Breaking the gate at odds of 38-1, Princess of Sylmar won Friday's 139th running of the Kentucky Oaks with jockey Mike Smith aboard.
Princess of Sylmar, trained by Todd Pletcher, paid $79.60 to win, $29.40 to place and $14.00 to show. Finishing second was Beholder, paying $9.00 and $5.60. In third was Unlimited Budget paying $3.80 to place. The race was run in a time of 1:49.17.
The $2.00 exacta paid $727.00, while the $2.00 Trifecta paid a whopping $3,470.80.
The Kentucky Oaks – the Kentucky Derby's sister race - was run before 113,820 fans, the second largest crowd ever to view the nation's most lucrative race for 3-year-old Thoroughbred fillies.
The winner receives a silver trophy, an estimated $564,200 payday and a garland of pink stargazer lilies.
The 1 1/8 mile race is held annually on the day before the Kentucky Derby.
