Even more impressive than the security work protecting the more than a quarter of a million spectators at Churchill Downs Friday and Saturday, was the volunteer work and giving done by more than a thousand people throughout the region and Commonwealth prior to Oaks and Derby.

The inaugural Kentucky Gives Day raised $330,000 for 304 nonprofit's from across the Commonwealth. As the Louisville television partner for this one day event two weeks ago, we salute all who contributed to support the missions of these charitable organizations.

The second annual Give a Day week of volunteer service in Louisville saw incredible giving, including 15 abandoned homes renovated or built from scratch by Habitat for Humanity and Fuller Center for Housing, 500 trees planted by UPS employees in two Louisville Parks, and 4,000 pounds of shoes donated to Water Step.

Kroger managers, who held their national meeting in Louisville, assembled 250,000 meals and 17,000 emergency food kits for Dare to Care. More than 1,300 volunteers contributed more than 8,200 hours of service for Kentucky Derby Festival events. And nearly a thousand people donated blood to the American Red Cross.

Thunder week – and Give a Day week - will be a week earlier next year– the week of April 12.

We certainly expect a great outpouring of compassion again next year but don't wait until then to keep up with your giving spirit. Build on the momentum you've started now!
