Brewer signs bill requiring taxi driver drug tests
PHOENIX (AP) -
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has signed a bill requiring taxi, livery and limousine companies to drug-test drivers before they're hired and re-test them at least once a year.
Senate Bill 1087 expands on federal rules that already require drug tests for school bus, light rail and other mass transit drivers.
The bill was drafted by the Arizona Department of Weights and Measures and sponsored by Republican Sen. Judy Burges of Sun City West.
Brewer said in a statement Tuesday that Arizonans who use taxis and limousine services should know the driver isn't using drugs. She called the bill a common-sense but crucial measure that will increase safety and might save lives.
The bill passed the Senate on a 30-0 vote and the House 47-13, with only Republican opposition.
