CHANDLER, AZ (CBS5) -

A man who fired on a Chandler police officer was wounded when the officer returned fire in the middle of a city street Wednesday night.

The suspect was identified Thursday as 50-year-old Steven Hernandez of Guadalupe.  Hernandez is still hospitalized and being treated for a gunshot wound.

The officer was looking for a man reportedly involved in a disturbance near Chandler Regional Hospital near Frye and Dobson roads about 8:10 p.m., Chandler police Sgt. Joe Favazzo said.

The officer saw a man matching the suspect's description walking along Frye Road between Alma School and Dobson roads and stopped to contact the man, Favazzo said.

Hernandez fired at the officer, who fired back, wounding the man in the arm, Favazzo said.

The suspect was taken to Chandler Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The officer was not hurt, Favazzo said.

The officer, who was not identified, was placed on paid administrative leave pending results of criminal and internal investigations, Favazzo said.

No other details were immediately available.
