Holyoke Police Department holds annual 5K event

For the third year in a row, western Massachusetts residents got the chance to outrun the law on Saturday.

The Elks Lodge was the site of the third annual 5K put on by the Holyoke Police Department.

Nearly 300 runners took to the course, to help raise money for the city's Boys and Girls Club.

With all of the work the department has been doing of late with community policing, race officials said the event is another step to reach out to the public.

"We have a mix of everybody here, which is what we strive for in the Holyoke Police Department," said Lt. Matthew Moriarty.  "Obviously the community policing has been a huge success recently thanks to the drive from Chief James Neiswanger and the support of Mayor Alex Morse. More importantly is that the officers are willing to come out. This event specifically is all volunteer."

In the race's first two years, organizers said thousands of dollars were donated to local charities.
