WAYNESVILLE, IN (WAVE) – A woman and three men who were fatally shot inside of a Waynesville home have been identified.
According to the Bartholomew County Sheriff Mark Gorbett, the bodies of Katherine Burton, 53, Thomas Smith, 39, Aaron Cross, 41, and Shawn Burton, 41, all of Columbus, Indiana were discovered Saturday night by Burton's son, Daniel Burton, 27.
According to deputies, around 10:39 p.m. Daniel Burton entered the home he lived in with his mother, located in the 2600 block of East Main Cross Street, and found two men who had been shot to death in the living room. He then tried to gain entry into his mother's room, but was not able, and called the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Office.
When deputies arrived on the scene they discovered a third man who was dead in the living room. Deputies broke into Katherine Burton's room and found she had been fatally shot in her bed.
Police confirmed Smith lived in the home with Katherine and Daniel Burton. Shawn Burton and Cross were not related to Katherine and Daniel Burton.
Gorbett confirmed all four victims sustained gunshot wounds. Autopsies are scheduled to be performed Monday in Seymour, Indiana.
Police wouldn't elaborate at a Sunday afternoon press conference on whether they have a suspect or suspects in the case, or their location.
"We have investigators from several agencies following up all leads at this time. We've been working around the clock and will continue to do so until we can bring those responsible to justice," said Bartholomew County Sheriff Mark Gorbett.
Southern Indiana resident Robert Degonia's daughter noticed the police presence Saturday night.
"She's actually in Seymour and her friend she was visiting was in Azalia, which is kind of almost in between and there was just law everywhere on the back roads searching for the suspect," he said.
If you have any information in this case you are asked to call the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Office at (812) 379–1650.
