LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - As it gets warmer outside more businesses are taking to the streets with door-to-door sales, but the warmer weather is also a breeding ground for potential scammers. Some living in Germantown worry people are going around their neighborhood claiming to be from security companies to gain access to homes.
Several Germantown residents reported two men with backpacks, gray shirts and clipboards have been soliciting in their neighborhood claiming to be with ADT or Vivint Security. The men have allegedly been aggressively trying to get into homes. Some residents have called police.
The Louisville Metro Police Department said calling police should not be a knee-jerk reaction and police should not be called unless a crime is being committed. An LMPD spokesman said soliciting is not necessarily illegal. They do caution residents, before opening your door and your home to a complete stranger, be very vigilant and find out as much information as you can.
Both ADT and Vivint dismissed claims that the solicitors are employed by their companies. ADT said they do not engage in door-to door sales. Vivint said their employees and contractors have identifying items, including: a branded logo shirt, an ID badge and a peddler's license.
