LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Fifty years ago segregation in the city of Louisville ended.

Monday, people gathered at the Brown Theatre to honor the historic event, as well as to educate those who may not be aware of what segregation was like in Louisville.

State Representative Darryl Owens explained, "There are a number of things that we couldn't do that kids now take for granted. But it's important for them to understand because I guess if you don't know your history, you're doomed to repeat it. So, I think it's important that we do this, remind them so they can understand the price their parents paid."

The Brown Theatre was chosen for the event due to its significance during the civil rights movement when students would protest outside.
