LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Several teachers in the Jefferson County Public School district have been laid off.
JCPS Spokesperson Ben Jackey confirmed 41 teachers, including 20 ECE teachers, have been laid off. An additional 114 teachers have been placed on an overstaffed list, meaning there is a chance they will not return to their current positions in the fall, but they will be moved to other positions within the district.
Jackey said budget projections, the reduction of state and federal funding and a decrease in the number of ECE students in the district all played a large role in the layoffs.
This is the largest layoff JCPS has announced in over a decade and along with the 20 ECE teachers 11 English teachers, seven physical education instructors, two early childhood teachers and one art teacher have also been laid off.
In ordinance with Kentucky state law JCPS had to notify the affected teachers that the district did not have the funding by May 15, 2013.
