(RNN) – David Beckham, the most recognizable soccer player to U.S. audiences since Pele, will retire at the end of the season.
Beckham, 38, has been playing in France for Paris St.-Germain and donating his salary to charity. The club won the league title. Beckham said he wanted to go out on a career high. He does have two games left to play with the team.
"I'm thankful to PSG for giving me the opportunity to continue but I feel now is the right time to finish my career, playing at the highest level," Beckham said in a statement.
The BBC reports during the midfielder's 20 year career, he has won 19 trophies, 10 of them league titles, and won championships in four countries.
The soccer star has appeared 115 times for England's national team, including the Olympics and the World Cup.
The footballer, known for his skilled left foot, previously played with the L.A. Galaxy from 2007 to 2012. He began his career with Manchester United in England, playing with the legendary club from 1993 to 2003. Beckham also played Real Madrid.
His wife, Victoria, was Posh Spice in the British girl group the Spice Girls. The couple has four children.
