RAMSEY, IN (WAVE) - A man is found shot to death inside a home within walking distance of three grade schools, but who did it and why is still unknown.

It was just before 9:30 a.m. Monday when Indiana State Police got to a home in the 1300 block of State Route 64 in Ramsey. Troopers found a woman on the porch and a man inside shot to death.

It was her barking dog that alerted neighbor Nancy Nagel to the activity happening at her neighbor's house.

"I know the kids got on the bus and I ate. My dog barked after that and Christy and Joey were out there in a truck," said Nagel. "It looked like they were messing with it. It looked like it wouldn't start or something, I don't know."

Nagel said the two had lived together in the home in the past, but he had moved out awhile ago so she didn't think much of it until the police showed up.

"I knew he had Crohn's disease so I thought maybe he had a spell or something at first," said Nagel. "Then I saw them take her out of the house and then I heard someone had been shot in the chest."

ISP won't confirm where the man was shot, how many times or why. They said when they got the call a trooper was nearby who responded immediately.

"He came in contact with a female who was on the front porch of the home and a male subject was inside of the home who was injured. He had an apparent gunshot wound," said Sergeant Jerry Goodin of the ISP Sellersburg post.

That man eventually died at the home.

The crime is within walking distance to North Harrison Schools, so ISP sent a trooper to the campus. The schools did notify parents, but kept all their other security measures the same as any other day.

ISP will not confirm if they have a suspect, only that there is no one on the loose. An autopsy on the victim is set for Tuesday morning. The Harrison County Coroner has yet to release his name.
