LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A Louisville man is behind bars for allegedly kidnapping a 17-year-old girl and holding her at gunpoint.

Louisville Metro Police arrested Bryan M. Smith, 20, on Sunday. Detectives say on Saturday, an unidentified juvenile told police that Smith accused her of stealing money from him.

According to police, Smith forced the juvenile into a car by gunpoint and eventually forced her in the trunk. Police say the victim was told repeatedly the she was going to be killed.

Authorities said Smith made phone contact with the family of the girl and demanded a ransom for her safe return. The victim was able to escape and eventually got help from residents near Sunset Avenue and Garrs Lane.

Renaul Johnson was sitting on the front porch of a friend when he saw the girl.

"I didn't know what was going on," said Johnson. "I just saw this little girl come down the street and she was crying. She asked if she could use the phone and called some people and police came around."

The 17-year-old was able to identify Smith and the vehicle she was forced in. Police say Smith fled on foot and was arrested for disorderly conduct. After police conducted their investigation and collected the victim's items, Smith was then charged with kidnapping.

Smith is being held on a $100,000 bond at Louisville Metro Corrections.
