LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - On Memorial Day, the nation honors and remembers the brave men and women who have served our country. Ceremonies were held across Kentuckiana, and they drew big crowds.

Many people visited Cave Hill Cemetery and Zachary Taylor National Cemetery on Monday. Tess Faust visited Cave Hill for her son.

"It's a difficult day, now more so than ever," said Faust.

Faust lost her son, Corporal Aaron Faust, April 15, 2012. He was only 22 years old and died in Afghanistan while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. This is Faust's second Memorial Day without him.

"With this one I'm calmer," said Faust. "I'm a little bit more at peace, and I'm ready to honor all who have fallen for our country."

It's that message that others want their children to know.

"I just want him to know what this holiday is all about, said mother Christy Shears of her 3-year-old son Robert.  Her older son posted colors at Zachary Taylor National Cemetery.

"It's very important to me for them to know there is always someone out there sacrificing even when we don't know that," said Shears.

While standing in the final resting place of heroes, it's about taking the time to notice the sacrifice the brave men and women gave for us.

"When you look at all of these graves all of the flags, you know this is just a small portion of the men and women who die for our country," said Faust. "It's overwhelming to me. I'm truly blessed to be in this country."

Visitors to the cemetery also spent the day cleaning headstones and placing flowers next to them.
