CDC encourages swimmers to test public pools for bacteria

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – You and your family could be swimming in a pool of bacteria.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says infections caused by bacteria in public pools are on the rise. Public pools are required to be tested for bacteria only once a day, so health officials are encouraging swimmers to take their own tests.

Visit healthypools.org to request a free test kit. You'll receive strips to dip in the pool before you take a dip yourself. The strips won't tell you whether bacteria are present, but they will tell you whether the chlorine level is high enough to kill bacteria. A reading of 1 or higher is ideal.

Health officials say swimmers should shower before going into a public pool and visit the restroom frequently to avoid becoming the very people bringing bacteria into the pool.
