LOUISVILLE,KY (WAVE) – You and your family could be swimming in a pool of bacteria.
TheCenters for Disease Control and Prevention says infections caused by bacteriain public pools are on the rise. Public pools are required to be tested for bacteria onlyonce a day, so health officials are encouraging swimmers to take their owntests.
Visithealthypools.org to request a free test kit. You'll receive strips to dip inthe pool before you take a dip yourself. The strips won't tell you whether bacteriaare present, but they will tell you whether the chlorine level is high enoughto kill bacteria. A reading of 1 or higher is ideal.
Healthofficials say swimmers should shower before going into a public pool and visitthe restroom frequently to avoid becoming the very people bringing bacteria intothe pool.
