One of the saddest realities of honoring our soldiers who lost their lives in service to our country is the number of self-inflicted deaths by active and veteran military members.
Almost once every hour, a military veteran commits suicide. Almost once a day, an active duty military member commits suicide - a record high - and less than 20% of them had actually been in combat.
Our armed services have added mental health counselors and conducted advertising campaigns to encourage troops to seek care. The Department of Veterans Affairs has reached out to those contemplating suicide with a new crisis line and website with multiple avenues, including text and online chat. The VA also created a task force to provide recommendations for innovative mental health care.
There are no easy solutions to curbing this crisis. But actively honoring our soldiers throughout the year can't hurt.
Reach out to those who have served and those currently serving us in any way you can. Every effort to lend a hand can only help.
