UTICA, IN (WAVE) - State and city leaders broke ground on the construction of a new bridge that will further connect southern Indiana to Kentucky.
Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer teamed with Indiana Governor Mike Pence as well as Kentucky and Indiana transportation officials for a groundbreaking ceremony for the new East End Crossing Bridge on Wednesday.
"The Ohio River Bridges project is going to help Indiana and Kentucky become an ever greater global distribution and logistics powerhouse," said Indiana Governor Mike Pence. "I strongly support this opportunity for our state and for our neighbors to the south."
The East End Crossing bridge will connect Prospect, Kentucky to Utica, Indiana. It is one of two new crossings being built to connect the states. The other bridge is the forthcoming Downtown Crossing Bridge in downtown Louisville.
Kentucky officials will oversee the Downtown Crossing Bridge while Indiana officials will oversee the East End Crossing Bridge.
Construction is expected to be wrap up in October of 2016.
