Hearing Amy Ellis talk this week about her murdered husband ripped your heart apart. Her strength during this unfathomable time is beyond admirable. Officer Jason Ellis by all accounts had already positively touched more people in his 33 short years of life than many of us hope to in double that time.

The anguish is gut-wrenching for the 25 police officers in Bardstown, and their community, considered the most beautiful small town in America by Rand McNally, the USA Today, and certainly many people in our region.

We grieve with them and applaud those who have contributed to the fund to support the Ellis family and help capture those responsible for killing Jason.

We salute all police officers who sacrifice much in the line of duty.

All of mankind takes a hit when someone is murdered, whether it is in a small town or a big city.

Every human life is precious, and the grief is enormous for all those victimized by murder.

We long for a week when we can report no murders in our region.
