The first Saturday in May in memorable worldwide for the Kentucky Derby and locally the first weekend in June is just as memorable for the most successful local telethon in the country, the WHAS Crusade for Children. Of course, the telethon really is a year round event of planning and execution.
Hats off to all who volunteer, coordinate and give to this community event that raises money to help children and the agencies that work with children. More than $6 million was raised this year, bring the 60 year total for Crusade to nearly $155 million.
It is quite a testimonial to the giving spirit of our community.
Hats off to the Pleasure Ridge Park Fire Department who led all fire departments in Kentucky by collecting more than $300,000. Also to the Lafayette Township Fire Department who led all fire departments in Indiana in collections.
Cheers as well to the parishioners of the Archdiocese of Louisville, who donated nearly a quarter of a million dollars to this year's effort, continuing a long history of giving to this cause.
The number of people who give to this effort is quite impressive and all should be commended.
You may never realize it but odds are good that some of the people you meet each week have been touched by your generosity to the Crusade.
