WWII Veterans arrive home from Honor Flight

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Sixty-nine years ago, American troops stormed the beaches at Normandy. To mark the occasion 26 World War II veterans from Kentuckiana were treated to an Honor Flight.

The veterans and their traveling partners left Thursday morning for a trip to Washington D.C.

In one day they visited the National World War II Memorial, the Korean War Memorial and the Iwo Jima Memorial.

WWII Veteran Hal Miller explained, "I've had my reservations to go back to Normandy three times since and I back out every time. The emotions are just too much."

Hundreds of people gathered at the Louisville International Airport Thursday evening to greet the Veterans as they arrived home and to thank them for their service.
