LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Here in Kentucky we love our bourbon, but maybe not enough to wait in line for hours for it. Dozens of people did just that Friday morning at stores across the Louisville Metro area. They were out to get one of the special Rick Pitino Maker's Mark bottles as soon as they went on sale. It appears that for basketball fans it was worth the wait.

"We came to get the Rick Pitino bottle," said Marissa Godby.

For basketball fans like Godby waiting in line before the sun came up was not a problem.

"We were first," said Godby, "We came from northern Kentucky and we got here around 1:30, quarter till two."

Godby wasn't alone. She was among dozens of people who woke up early to wait in line at the Liquor Barn off Hurstbourne Parkway. Fans came to Louisville from across the Commonwealth in hopes of getting their hands on a bottle.

David Hager said he got up at 5:30 a.m. and left his Lexington home at 6 a.m. to buy his keepsake.

"Maker's Mark has bottles that come out every year," said Hager, "and I've just been collecting for probably six or seven years now. I figure this is going to be a rare bottle."

Hager made the trip to stand in line and he isn't even a Cards fan.

"No, I'm a UK fan," said a laughing Hager. "Like I said, I'm a Maker's Mark collector, so it will go in the back of my collection."

It turns out Hager wasn't the only Big Blue fan who showed up. Byron Adkins drove from Mount Washington to buy bottles for his brothers who are both Cards fans.

"Well, I'll take some grief, but you know, it is what it is," said Adkins. "Brotherly love comes before grief from work mates friends and all that."

Whether they bleed red or blue these fans can all agree on one thing - their love of basketball and national championships.

"We've got UK keeping it in the state last year, UofL keeping it this year," said Godby. "Let's keep it rolling."

If you were lucky enough to get one of these special bottles, Pitino will hold a signing event at the KFC Yum! Center on July 13. To get your bottle signed you must go online and buy a $1.00 ticket in advance. Click the following link to get your ticket: Rick Pitino Maker's Mark bottle autograph tickets.
