  • Teens are sharing more information about themselves on social media sites than they have in the past.
  • Teens are also taking a variety of technical and non-technical steps to manage the privacy of that information.
  • Despite taking these privacy-protective actions, teen social media users do not express a high level of concern about third-parties (such as businesses or advertisers) accessing their data; just 9% say they are "very" concerned.
  • Stats since last survey in 2006:

o   91% post a photo of themselves, up from 79% in 2006.

o   71% post their school name, up from 49%.

o   71% post the city or town where they live, up from 61%.

o   53% post their email address, up from 29%.

o   20% post their cell phone number, up from 2%.

o   16% automatically include location in their posts

  • 59% deleted something they previously posted
  • 19% post content they later regret sharing
  • 60% of teen Facebook users set their Facebook profiles to private (friends only), and most report high levels of confidence in their ability to manage their settings.

 

 

 

Why is this important?

  • Understand that once something is digitized, it's forever
  • More recruiters and employers are using social media to screen candidates
  • Search engines make it very easy to find information
  • What seems cool/fun now may not in 5 years
  • You can be associated (tagged) with information without your knowledge or approval
  • Even if information is "deleted" it may still be in a database and still searchable by Google, Bing, etc.

 

What can you do?:

  • Think long-term
  • Limit what is shared
  • Understand the permanence of digital information
  • Understand that these rules apply to ALL digital information (text, e-mail, sms, skype, chat, social media, video, etc).
  • Ensure that you have access to and check your kid's accounts
