Toledo Fire and Rescue diver training put to use

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Toledo Fire and Rescue says they are prepared for more water activity as temperatures rise. They took to the water recently for training to make sure of it.

The Maumee River poses challenges for rescue teams, including strong currents zero visibility. For the past 20 years, Toledo Fire and Rescue has had the skills to save lives, not only on land, but also in the water. They continue to train each year to stay on top of their game.

"The main goal is water rescue," said Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld. "Unfortunately, a lot of times, because of this black water…it's absolutely zero visibility. When these divers go down, it's all by feel, or by guidance by sonar."

The hours of practice and training were put to use just a few days later when the team searched the Maumee for missing east Toledo toddler Elaina Steinfurth.

The divers say they are there to help when trouble strikes on the water, and they trust each other to get the job done.

"We trust each other every day, in different situations, in fires and accidents and hazardous events," said Steven Morgan. "It's a different scenario, but the same trust factor."
