LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A tire failure caused a chartered school bus to crash into a barrier wall along Interstate 64. Six people were still hospitalized at University Hospital and one person was still being treated at Kosair Children's Hospital as of Wednesday evening.

Commonwealth Bus Services owned and operated the bus involved in the accident, according to Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement. JCPS hired the Commonwealth to transport Waggener High School upperclassmen to and from colleges throughout Kentucky during day trips.

"They are just now making contact with the company. It's taken them this long to track down the company owner," Officer Scott Koch said.

Chartered buses like the one involved in Tuesday's accident are subject to random roadside inspections by Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers. Koch said contract buses could go a lifetime and never be inspected by the state because it's not required by state or federal law.

However, an annual inspection report must be on board commercial vehicles at all times. Investigators are still searching for that important document. "Our officers haven't been able to locate that inspection report on the bus," Koch said.

A federal database reveals Commonwealth Bus Services is in good standing. A Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration report does not list an fatal, injury or at-fault accidents in the last two years. Commonwealth is rated as satisfactory - one of three ratings the FMCSA designates. If a company is rated unsatisfactory it cannot operate. A conditional rating indicates a company is on probation.

Twelve patients were taken to University, 11 from the bus and one more from another vehicle. No one faced life threatening injuries.
