Crews battle two-house fire in Oregon Thursday morning

OREGON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Two Oregon families are recovering after losing their homes to an early morning fire Thursday.

The homes were on Lake Way Drive, right near Lake Erie.

"It was just choking, just choking, burning smoke," said Betsy Urso. "I couldn't see anything. It was dark."

Urso and her boyfriend were inside one house when they woke up to the smell of smoke around 2:30 a.m.

"We couldn't get out of the first window, so then we got out of the second story window and jumped off the ledge," Urso explained.

They then ran next door to call 911. That's when they discovered the fire had spread to their neighbor's home.

"Upon my arrival, we had the large white house that was fully involved, and the blue house right next to it was partially involved," said Oregon Fire Chief Ed Ellis.

There were three people in the neighboring home. They all made it out safely.

Ellis says Urso and her boyfriend were lucky, because they didn't have a working smoke alarm.

"I can't stress it enough for people to have a working smoke alarm in their homes, to check it on a regular basis, to change the battery on a regular basis," he said.

Urso is looking at the bright side.

"Things work out, and there are worse things in this world than something like this," she said. "It's just shocking."
