Off to Ohama!
LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The University of Louisville Cardinals left for Omaha, Nebraska Thursday with a goal to bring home a College World Series title.
The Cardinal nine is heading off for the program's second-ever appearance in the CWS. The baseball team hopes to make history beginning this weekend.
Their self-proclaimed biggest fan, 3rd grader Mattie Rutledge, came to the Kentucky Expo Center to see the guys off. Her favorite player is outfielder Matt Helms. She says she was excited when watching the team defeat Vanderbilt.
"I was so excited because Matt, if it wasn't for him, then we wouldn't have beat Vandy in that last game and we wouldn't have had the chance to go to the World Series," said Mattie.
"It's amazing," said Helms, "it's just all the hard work has been out in and it's time to reap the benefits now."
Helms said that all the players are concentrating on bringing home the trophy. Winning the CWS would seal the deal on a great year for Cardinal athletics. They have dominated in New Orleans with football, Atlanta with the men's basketball team, and are hopeful that Omaha will be next.
The Cardinals open action against Indiana on Saturday.
