CANNELTON, IN (WFIE) -

Police have arrested a Cannelton man after authorities in Perry County say he beat his wife and barricaded himself in a neighbor's home.

Officials say 54-year-old William Donahoo resisted officers for two hours early Thursday morning before they finally took him into custody.

Neighbors 14 News spoke with say Donahoo tried to cut his wife's throat and strangle her with a phone cord, and some say they aren't surprised that he did this since he's had multiple run-ins with police in the past.

"They were in the trailer, started the argument, went outside, and then went back in," says Vickie Applegate, a neighbor and a friend of Cindy and William Donahoo. She says the two had a heated argument on Wednesday night. That's when William allegedly attacked his wife.

"He sliced her throat, made a cut, and then he took a phone cord and wrapped it around her neck and choked her," says Applegate.

Applegate says the Donahoo's have only been married for two weeks, and it's unclear what they were arguing about. Nonetheless, police got a call a little before midnight, and Perry County Sheriff's Deputies, Cannelton Police, Tell City Police, and State Police all got involved.

"Cannelton Police Department requested a negotiator," says Detective Alan Malone. "Two of our negotiators, myself and another officer from Tell City Police Department went to Cannelton."

Police say Donahoo ran from officers into the next door trailer. He then barricaded himself inside, and ignored police calls to come out.

"After an hour the decision was made by Cannelton Police Department to enter the residence," says Malone.

Police say they found Donahoo drunk and alone inside his neighbor's trailer. His wife refused treatment for her injuries, and Donahoo was arrested and charged with battery, strangulation, and resisting law enforcement.

Police also say they found marijuana growing inside Donahoo's trailer, and that he will likely face more charges as a result of that discovery.
