TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
Volunteers around northwest Ohio collected money for autism awareness Friday and Saturday for the annual "Give Autism the Boot" event.
Autism is a brain disorder that affects a person's ability to communicate, to reason, and to interact with others. The Great Lakes Center for Autism is proud to bring the "Give Autism the Boot!" campaign to northwest Ohio every year. All the money raised will help fund local programs providing help to people affected by autism. Click here to learn more!
"Give Autism the Boot" raised about $100,000 in this year's drive.
Toledo News Now was a sponsor of the event.
Melissa Voetsch returned from medical leave for just one weekend to kick off the campaign, which is near and dear to her heart.
Firefighters and other volunteers collected donations at many high traffic locations around the city of Toledo and in the surrounding area on Friday and Saturday.
