LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – People gathered this weekend for a vigil to remember a Louisville woman killed last week in the Shawnee neighborhood. Many who attended were struggling to cope with the loss.

Michal Phelps was described by friends and family as smart, compassionate, and with a sarcastic sense of humor. Phelps, 28, was killed early on June 11 by her stepfather, Fred Leach, Sr., 55, after being shot at a home in the 100 block of North 36th Street. According to Louisville Metro Police detectives, there was a dispute over who should be living at the home which ended when Leach fired a gun.

Phelps' two twin cousins, both college students, also suffered gunshot wounds.

Leach was arraigned June 12 on charges of murder, attempted murder, assault and tampering with physical evidence. Jefferson District Court Judge Jennifer Bryant Wilcox set bond at $250,000 full cash.
