TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -
There's been no sign of 18-month-old Elaina Steinfurth since June 2nd, when she was reportedly last seen on the 700 block of Federal Street in east Toledo. Police, now joined by the FBI, and the public continue to search the streets and river, following every lead they receive.
As for Elaina's family, they have been involved from the beginning, and say they aren't going anywhere.
"It's been a long, long two weeks…Imagine how long it's been for Elaina," said Ginger Smith, a cousin of Elaina's. "I told Terry [Elaina's father] I'd be here to the end with him, and I'm gonna be here to the end with him."
Last Wednesday, Elaina's mother Angela was arrested and charged with child endangerment. Police believe Angela knew Elaina was hurt, but did not take her to the hospital. Smith and others have wondered if Angela knows more about the baby's disappearance that she has yet to confess.
"I believe, possibly, yes, she does," Smith said. "Being a mother, myself - I know where my kids are at, who my kids are with. I know who comes into my house and who goes out of my house. I know who they associate with."
Smith and her husband urge people to help by offering any information they know to the police.
"Look in your backyard, look behind your garage. You never know…Or you go to a grocery store and you see a baby in a cart, you know, take that second glance," she said. "We just want her to come home. We're begging. Somebody's gotta know something out there. Come forward. Tell us something, tell us anything."
Anyone with even the smallest piece of information should call 1-800-CALL-FBI.
