Recently the Tampa Bay Times published a piece on bogus charities – organizations that spend at least 90 percent of funds donated on administration and fundraising, not what they claim.
Dick Eppstein with the Better Business Bureau says these charities will often use familiar words – like "wish foundation" and "cancer relief" - in their names to get your attention, but they are not the legitimate charities.
"When you donate to them, most often, you'll find your money is wasted," he said.
Eppstein lists the top 10 worst charities to donate to:
Kids Wish Network
Cancer Fund of America
Children's Wish Foundation International
American Breast Cancer Foundation
Firefighters Charitable Foundation
Breast Cancer Relief Foundation
International Union of Police Associations
National Veterans Service Fund
American Association of State Troopers
Children's Cancer Fund of America
Eppstein says these charities will often solicit donations by telemarketing. He says if you have concerns, you should call the Better Business Bureau before making any donation.
You can reach the Better Business Bureau at 419-531-3116 or 1-800-743-4222.
