WOOD COUNTY, OH (Toledo News Now) -
Ohio State Highway Patrol dispatchers say the driver who fled the scene after being stopped for a traffic violation Thursday is now in custody.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Patrick Hammond, 42, was arrested Friday evening at the Petro truck stop on I-280 in Lake Township.
Hammond was observed by an officer in the parking lot of the truck stop and ran away on foot.
A canine officer was able to find Hammond a short time later.
Around 2 p.m. Thursday, the Ohio State Highway Patrol says troopers pulled over Hammond on I-280 near the turnpike in Lake Township. The patrol says during the traffic stop, Hammond started acting strange. The trooper thought Hammond may have had a gun, but when he went to grab Hammond, Hammond pushed the trooper away, jumped the guardrail and ran into a wooded area nearby.
Troopers say that Hammond dropped a loaded .38 caliber weapon near the guardrail as he fled. Despite the fact he dropped a gun, the patrol says Hammond should be considered armed and dangerous. They also found ammunition in Hammond's car.
After a four-hour manhunt Thursday, which involved searching by helicopter and checking area motels and truck stops, troopers called off the all-out search. They will, however, continue to patrol the area and watch for the suspect.
Hammond is currently on federal probation for armed robbery.
"You never know who you're stopping, or where they're coming from, or what they're up to," said OSHP Lt. Bill Stidham. "The majority of the public that we deal with are - 95 percent of them are - good people. It's just the bad apples we run into, like this gentleman."
The Bowling Green Post of the Highway Patrol handled the search and towed the car for processing.
On Friday, search efforts continued in Wood County. The OSHP said they also would search in Lorain County, where Hammond lives, because they believed he might try to make his way back home.
The sergeant on duty says the patrol is investigating exactly what happened during the traffic stop. Additional charges related to the traffic stop are pending.
Hammond was taken to the Wood County Justice Center and is expected to be arraigned on Monday.
