University of Louisville first baseman Alicja Wolny has been selected to play for the Great Britain National Softball team and will compete in European Women's Fastpitch Championships July 7-13 in Prague.
Wolny, whose mother is a native of England, is among 17 players selected to represent Great Britain in the European Softball Federation Women's Fastpitch Championships. The tournament will feature over 20 teams with the top four finishers advancing to the International Softball Federation World Championships which will be held in August, 2014 in the Netherlands. Great Britain has finished second and third in the last two European Championships.
"I am honored to have to opportunity to compete for Great Britain," said Wolny. "I wasn't ready to quit playing softball when my college career was over, so I'm really excited to continue playing the sport that I love. This is a dream come true for me."
Wolny (El Dorado Hills, Calif.)was an NFCA second team all-America selection after leading the Cardinals with a .423 batting average. The first baseman belted out 11 home runs, scored 42 runs and set a new school record with 55 RBIs during her senior season. She is a two-time All-Great Lakes Region first team and four-time All-BIG EAST Conference selection. The four-year starter finished her career ranked in the top five in all-time hits, doubles, home runs, RBI and walks, games played and started.
