Neighbors rescued from burning Buechel apartment building

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Several people were rescued from a fire at a Buechel apartment building Sunday night.

Fire crews were dispatched to a report of a fire at Beechbrook Drive and Beechbrook Court around 10:15 p.m. Sunday, according to Chief Richard Harrison of the Buechel Fire Protection District. Upon arriving, firefighters discovered flames in apartment #4 on the first floor of the 12 unit building.

Harrison said firefighters rescued a woman and an infant from the second floor apartment above the unit that was burning. The infant was taken to Kosair Children's Hospital to be evaluated for possible smoke inhalation.

A security guard who lives in the building evacuated people from the first floor.

Harrison said the cause of the fire was food left cooking on a stove the woman who lives in apartment #4 thought she had turned off.

The Red Cross was called to help residents find accommodations since water, gas and electric utilities had to be secured.
