SELLERSBURG, IN (WAVE) – People who live on East Delaware Court in Sellersburg awoke on Tuesday to find the house used in a standoff a day earlier destroyed.
On Monday afternoon, police were asked to perform a mental check on Josh Priddy at his home on Iowa Street. Sellersburg Police Chief Russ Whelan said when arrived, Priddy was with his two children, armed, and that Priddy aimed the gun at him before running away on foot.
Police said Priddy ran to a house on East Delaware Court, broke in the back door and began firing at officers. A standoff lasted more than nine hours while neighbors were on lockdown.
"I saw the riot police," neighbor Joe Couch said. "The police were all around there and all over the place. They were looking everywhere around the house."
Chief Whelan said after hours of exchanging gunfire with Priddy and launching tear gas into the house, Priddy, a former Louisville Fire sergeant, made it clear he had a plan.
"He knew what he was doing when he was firing through the wall. That was part of his plan," Whelan said. "If he could hit one, I believe he said, we would have to tend to that officer and that may give him a chance to escape."
Rhonda VanMeter lives two doors down from the house used in the standoff. She said her 14-year-old daughter got caught in the lockdown.
"I was at work and got a phone call from my mother that the police were all over my yard," VanMeter said. "My daughter was in the house by herself."
