Man walks for Gina, Amanda and Michelle

Alex Sheen Alex Sheen

It is a story about commitment to a cause and one man's journey across Ohio. It's a journey that began with the catch phrase, "because I said I would."

His journey began 11 days ago in Cincinnati and continued gimpy step after gimpy step, block after block, mile after mile.

Alex Sheen is from Lakewood and quit his job to pursue his passion.  One stirred by Gina DeJesus, Amanda Berry and Michelle Knight's 10-year nightmare.

"The goal is to raise awareness of the issue.  We don't talk enough about it in society, it is everywhere, sexual violence," said Sheen.

He walked for 10 to 12 hours a day, charged by dogs, and passed by more road kill than you can imagine, but always kept his focus.

"People you know shake their fists at Ariel Castro and they get mad and angry and they cry, but what are we gonna do and so I said if I really cared about these victim's I'd put myself out there."

His focus is paying off. His organization "Because I said I would" is getting hits on the Internet, raising both money and awareness through videos and news coverage.

There is another goal, the city's image, "I talk to people who are from out of state and they say 'Oh that's place where people are raped and I don't want that to be what Cleveland is about.'"

He hopes Clevelanders will walk the last 10,000 feet with him and says if you're interested meet at Wildlife Way and Peral.  That is the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo entrance.

"I made a promise to those women and I'll be damned if I don't keep it."
