A man who beat a nun over the head with a flashlight and then strangled her in northwestern New Mexico in 2009 has been sentenced to 40 years in federal prison.
Prosecutors say 21-year-old Reehahlio Carroll was sentenced Friday in federal court in Albuquerque.
He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in April under a deal that saved him a possible mandatory life sentence.
Carroll was charged in the November 2009 killing of Sister Marguerite Bartz.
The 64-year-old nun had interrupted a burglary at her home on the St. Berard Mission in the community of Navajo on the Navajo Indian Reservation.
Carroll was arrested days later after he was seen driving Bartz's car.
His case was delayed until a judge ruled in June 2011 that Carroll was competent to stand trial.
